Each year during National Nurses Week, we take time to recognize the extraordinary professionals who care for us during some of life’s most vulnerable moments. This week, we’re proud to spotlight Michele Lewis, a dedicated nurse at Wellstar who has spent three decades in the field—28 of those years in obstetrics.
Michele’s passion for helping mothers, babies, and families shines through in every patient interaction. From postpartum care to labor and delivery to outpatient OB, her compassion and commitment have made a lasting impact on countless lives. We’re honored to share her story and celebrate the heart she brings to nursing.
Michele’s journey into nursing began in high school.
"I was in high school when I decided to pursue nursing. I enjoyed taking care of people and helping to improve their health. Marriage and babies delayed my career, but I graduated from nursing school at 35 years old."
Over the course of her 30-year career, Michele found her calling in obstetrics—an area that’s become both her specialty and her passion.
“I have worked in OB 28 of the 30 years of my nursing career. I started with postpartum, then moved on to labor and delivery/newborn nursing and now outpatient OB. I enjoyed helping new moms breastfeed and I like teaching the OB patients about taking care of themselves in pregnancy.”

For Michele, the true reward lies in knowing she’s made a difference.
“It is most rewarding when I know I have made an impact in my patients' care or made a difference for them during their pregnancy.”
Of course, nursing also comes with its challenges.
“The most challenging times for me are when patients are noncompliant with their care. Sometimes they don’t seem to understand the importance of taking care of themselves and getting regular prenatal care.”
Through it all, Michele continues to guide others—both patients and future nurses—with her experience and insight.
“I would advise a new nurse, or someone interested in nursing to truly listen to their patients. I believe nursing also requires patience and showing genuine concern for the patient's well-being and their situation.”
To continue showing up for others, Michele knows the importance of taking care of herself.
“Work-life balance is huge in nursing. I enjoy walking, reading, my beach time and finding a creative outlet.”

And when asked what she wishes more people understood about the profession, Michele offers an honest perspective:
“What most people don’t understand is nurses work long, hard hours. Many times, without meal or restroom breaks. Nurses will continue to go above and beyond for their patients, as well as their patient’s families. Nursing is about continuing education, tireless dedication, patience, sympathy and empathy for those entrusted in our care.”
For Michele Lewis, nursing has always been about more than clinical care—it’s about listening, teaching, and truly showing up for her patients. Her three decades of service, especially in obstetrics, are a testament to the power of dedication and empathy in healthcare.
During National Nurses Week and every week, we celebrate nurses like Michele, who continue to go above and beyond with every shift. Thank you, Michele, for your unwavering commitment to your patients and your profession.
